Philosophy2021Protect the commons and boost public goods through governmentsIt is easy to think that the products, the market goods, of different kinds that we buy in stores brings us most value. However, they would be nothing, nothing without life-giving system of earth, literally.
Everything comes from nature and so ecosystems have to be protected. For our survival. For natures’ own sake. However our economic system provides solely incentives for producing and allocating market goods which puts our human society on collision course with services provided by natural resources (public goods) and life-sustaining functions of our planet. It puts us human beings on the road to hell and hell is not a good place we think.
Not only nature provides public good. We humans can do it by sharing using our nature fed resources to share knowledge and information that enhances our possibilities to prospers and to create spaces where we can interact and enjoy the company of each other. Think of universal vaccine against cancer. Think of public parks where we feel nature. Think of museums where we experience awe. Think of hospitals where we help our sick. Think of theatres and music hall where we can enjoy life. Think of libraries as the storage of wisdom. Think of football fields for our kids to play. Think of schools where they can learn. And think of public transportation how we get there.
The economic system we have created and the institutions deployed by us to back it up has created a bias against public goods for market goods. This tilt not only has, as noted above, put us on a dangerous path of ecosystem destruction, it also affects human well-being. The social structure that we have create feedbacks to us and creates expectation and determine what we think is possible. As the institutions and policies are not value free we have to become aware of what values they signal back to us and change them so that they promote our well-being within the limits of the planet.
